Monaghan takes a Giant Leap:  Peat-Free Mushrooms now a reality.

19 November 2024

Monaghan is breaking new ground. We’re proud to announce that we’re the first UK & Ireland producer to grow peat-free mushrooms, removing virgin peat from the growing process. This is a big step towards our carbon reduction goals.

These aren’t just any mushrooms. They’re a revolution in how we think about sustainability & food production.

Mushrooms are a staple in the UK, with over 1.5 billion portions sold each year. But until now, their growth has depended on peat, a carbon-rich substance that can harm wetlands ecosystems. We’ve changed the game with a new, sustainable substrate made from recycled natural materials.

Our achievement isn’t just a win for the environment. Our peat-free mushrooms are superior in quality, with a firmer texture, a whiter colour and a longer shelf life.

Peat free mushrooms are currently available in selected Sainsbury’s stores and will be more widely available in the months to come.

Noel Hegarty, Chief Commercial Officer at Monaghan, says: “At Monaghan, reducing our climate impact is at the heart of everything we do. Peat-free mushrooms are a major breakthrough in our journey to net zero.”
